Stan and Christina Grof coined the term “spiritual emergency” to allude to crises that carry a deep personal transformation, frequently associated with spiritual opening. With this name they want to evoke, also, the positive potential of these states, suggesting that they are an opportunity to “emerge”, to rise to a higher level of psychological functioning and even of spiritual awareness.
